wow, this is fascinating… and I think soldiers, being so wired these days, would be particularly receptive to online dispute resolution. Brad, have you had any discussions with folks in the Canadian military about technology-based conflict resolution? I’d be curious to get Frank Fowlie’s input on this article as well.
Not specifically, with respect to what we would call operational environments. We use it to some degree in our work place conflict management program. It seems an interesting thought, however, my initial sense is that any technology that puts physical space between the negotiators might be counter productive in certain types of interactions, e.g. soldiers and local populations. I have to admit, I’m pretty ignorant with respect to cutting edge technology in this area – any specific thoughts?
I’d certainly agree with that, Brad. The cross cultural challenges would seem to preclude online intervention, particularly in a culture that values face-to-face interaction and long term family knowledge and personal introduction. On the other hand, I could see how online interventions among same country soldiers might be useful if there was not someone with the requisite skills deployed with the group.
